  • British sailors top Star Sailors League world rankings for 2022 SSL Gold Cup final

The Star Sailors League is a sailing circuit launched in 2013 that organizes events and ranks athletes (not boats) as “Stars”, maintaining a world ranking of coxswains/crews over 15,000 regattas/year in over 100 country.

The SSL Nations Gold Cup features a country versus country championship, and will take place for the first time in 2022.

The competition is open to 140 countries whose National Federations are recognized by World Sailing.

The objective is to crown the first sailing nation.

2022 GC SSL Ranking

The first ranking of the Gold Cup nations of the year is decisive for the 56 national teams participating in the inaugural edition of the SSL Gold Cup.

The top 24 ranked teams are directly seeded for the final series in October 2022, while teams ranked 25-56 must qualify in the qualifying series events between May and July 2022.

Sixteen teams from the qualifying series will then join the 24 seeds for the final series starting October 28, 2022.

The Great Britain squad, whose captain Ian Williams, a six-time world match-racing champion, qualified first in the Gold Cup standings and will be seeded in the quarter-finals in the final of the Gold Cup in October.

In addition to the team event, SSL maintains an individual helm/crew ranking database that takes into consideration each athlete’s six best scores over the past 156 weeks.

This ranks athletes competing in Major Events, Special Events, Olympic Classes, World Sailing Classes, and other classes, representing over 5,000 events and classes.

The SSL World Rankings are updated weekly and published every Tuesday on www.starsailors.com.

13,000 athletes are listed in the database – 67,000 skippers and 47,000 crews.

New Zealander Pete Burling, second Tonci Stipanovic CRO, third Briton John Gimson, is currently leading the men’s standings.

Anne-Marie Rindom of Denmark leads the women’s bars rankings. Second Marit Bouwmeester NED, third Martine Soffiatti Grael BRA. The fourth is the British Hannah Mills.
